Around 00.10am, three men were stood at Maryhill Road, near to the junction of Dunard Street, when they were approached by a man and a woman walking a dog, who came from the direction of Dunard Street.
The group then became involved in a disturbance, which spilled out onto the road, affecting road users and causing a disruption.
The incident resulted in a 20 year-old man being seriously assaulted by the man who had been walking with the woman. He was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where he received treatment for a heard injured and has since been released.
Officers have been reviewing CCTV images for any additional detail on the incident and the suspects and they continue to carry out door-to-door enquiries.
The suspect was wearing a black t-shirt, bright coloured shorts. The woman in the company of this man was wearing white trousers and a black t-shirt and walking the dog.
Detective Constable Andrew Barbour said: “The motive for this attack is unknown. From enquiries carried out so far, the area was heavily populated around the time of the incident and I am appealing to people were in the area at the time.
“In particular, I am asking the two men who were in the company of the injured male to contact us. I am also asking any motorists who were affected when the disturbance spilled onto the roadway to get in touch.
“It’s possible you saw or noticed something which could assist our investigation. Any small piece of information could prove significant so please do pass it on.”
