A 1000-year-old doorframe and a 700-year-old sword are amongst seven artefacts now travelling from Glasgow to New Delhi.

The objects, stolen during nineteenth century British rule, are the first ever artefacts to be returned to India from the UK.

Correcting colonial mistakes

Duncan Dornan, head of museums with Glasgow Life said: "I think it's really important for the people of the Indian diaspora in Glasgow to know that we're trying to correct the mistakes of the past.

"This represents the establishment of a new relationship between Glasgow and India, which is one of equality, between peers."

The objects include a ceremonial Indo-Persian tulwar (sword), believed to date back to the 14th century and an 11th century carved stone door jamb taken from a Hindu temple in Kanpur.

They were carefully packed into crates at Glasgow Museums Resource Centre on Tuesday 10 January before beginning their journey to the Archaeological Survey of India, where the artefacts will go on display.
