An Edinburgh man claims staff on a flight from New York to London failed to take proper precautions for his food allergies.
Declan, who is allergic to nuts as well as food such as carrots and lentils says he informed staff of his allergies when boarding the flight.
He wasn't able to provide a full list of the foods he's allergic to prior to that as he says the booking system didn't have the option.
In a Twitter thread Declan said:
"Just had the worst flight experience of my life with @AmericanAir Completely stunned by their disregard for my health and reckless attitude towards my nut allergy.
"When boarding, I informed a crew member that I was allergic to nuts, as well as other foods, and that I carried an EpiPen.
"They told me to tell someone at my seat. When I did this, they looked at me w/ a blank expression as though the information I was providing was irrelevant.
"Whenever I’ve told someone before, a PA announcement has been made asking people not to consume nuts.
"I explained that I was anxious about others eating nuts as it would be in the air so perhaps they’d like to announce something.
"Request was simply ignored."
Declan goes on to claim food containing pesto, which is made with pine nuts, was served on the flight.
He says staff also handed out fruit and nuts to passengers, including Declan himself.
And he says they did not have a full ingredient list for all meals provided on the flight, meaning Declan couldn't assess if they contained some of the foods he cannot consume.
"I’m disgusted and so upset by this experience. Luckily I’m fine, but could easily have not been.
"This just shouldn’t have happened. I’m angry that it did, but it cannot be allowed to happen to someone else. " he said.
American Airlines say they are going to get in touch with Declan.
