Airport hotel evacuated because of gas leak
The M8 was closed off but reopened in time for the rush hour
Around 200 people have been evacuated from a hotel at Glasgow Airport after a gas leak.
Part of the M8 motorway was also closed while firefighters and gas engineers worked on repairing the pipe leak in St Andrew's Drive, Paisley, close to the car park of the Holiday Inn Express.
Police were called to the incident at around 2.45am on Friday and moved guests to the nearby Holiday Inn as a precaution. There are no reports of any injuries or illness.
The airport is said to be operating as normal as Scottish Gas Network engineers work to isolate the leak and the M8 was reopened at junction 28 at around 6.30am.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) spokesman said: Firefighters have been working with police officers to evacuate nearby premises, which is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of the public. There are no reports of any casualties.
"Gas engineers have traced the leak to a subterranean mains pipe and SFRS crews are standing by to assist while they work to isolate it.
"There are three fire engines and a specialist vehicle at the scene and crews will continue to work with the other emergency services for the duration of the incident, which is likely to continue for some time."
Police said people travelling to Glasgow Airport on Friday should allow extra time for the journey.
An airport spokesman said: "The airport remains open as normal but please leave additional time for your journey."
