A man has been jailed for at least 16 years after being found guilty of murdering his neighbour in Airdrie.

44 year old Jorgo Pano was found guilty at the High Court in Glasgow and sentenced to life, with a minimum of 16 years in jail.

David Newton, 49, died in hospital the day after he was attacked at his own home, on McAlister Avenue on March 7 2021 , by his neighbour, Pano.

Pano was initially arrested and charged with attempted murder but following Mr Newton’s death, was then charged with murder.

Detective Inspector Gordon Sneddon said: “We welcome the conviction and immediate sentencing today of Jorgo Pano. This was a senseless attack on a man in his own garden. David Newton was a family man and well liked in the local community. We hope this outcome will be of some comfort to David’s family and friends.”
