A man is critically ill in hospital after being stabbed and beaten in a "savage'' attack in Airdrie.

Police are treating the assault on a 32-year-old man as attempted murder - the victim was chased from a house in Hawthorn Drive into Sycamore Drive, where he was found at around 3.10am.

He is being treated for critical injuries at Monklands Hospital. The man who chased him later returned to the house in Hawthorn Drive and attacked a woman aged 25 before making off in a car.

He is described as white and wore dark clothing with white footwear.

Detective Inspector Martin Fergus said: We are currently checking CCTV to establish the circumstances of the attack, who is responsible and how many people were involved.

Thankfully a member of the public came to the aid of the man and called the ambulance. He was stabbed and beaten in what I would describe as a savage attack.

Although this happened in the early hours of the morning, we know that a number of taxis were in the area either dropping off or picking up people in the street at the time. I would appeal to taxi drivers, or indeed anyone who was in the area to contact police.

There would also have been some considerable noise in the street as a result of the attack so people in the area would have heard, if not seen, what had happened.''

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
