An Airdrie flat is being redecorated for a Ukrainian family fleeing the Russian invasion.

Fifteen-year-old Nika and her mum are due to arrive in Scotland next week and are being sponsored to live here.

Fiona Leggat from Chernobyl Children's Lifeline Forth and Clyde Valley Link told Clyde 1: "We wanted them to come over here and have their own independence as a family unit.

"I was able to get the two bedroom flat through a friend which will give Nika and her mum the space they both need.

"The landlord has just renovated the flat and so it is very nicely decorated for them."

The Airdrie charity, Diamonds in the Community is going to furnish their accommodation.

However, there is a plea for people to donate essential goods like bedding, towels and clothing.

Chairman of Chernobyl Children's Lifeline, John McDonald, said: "I have been involved since 2011 and I have met Nika before because we brought her over to Scotland for an exchange trip a few years ago.

"You develop a strong bond with children in these situations when you are looking after them in your house and taking them out to places.

"The last few weeks have been very emotional for us all."
