Afghani-Born Man Jailed For Raping Woman

An Afghani-born sex predator has been jailed for seven years after subjecting a woman to a rape ordeal at a flat in Glasgow.

Ibrahim Ahmadi attacked the 25-year-old victim after she had been drinking.

A judge told 23 year old Ahmadi at the High Court in Edinburgh: "You have been found guilty of the rape by having sex with her while she was incapable of giving or withholding her consent."

Judge Nigel Morrison QC told the rapist that he noted that he still continued to deny the offence.

But the judge said there was "no alternative" to a jail sentenced for the crime he was convicted of committing.

Mr Morrison told Ahmadi: "I consider that the appropriate sentence is seven years imprisonment."

He also told Ahmadi, formerly of Balmore Road, Glasgow, that he would be placed on the sex offenders' register indefinitely.

Ahmadi assaulted the woman on March 2 last year and removed clothing from her and lay on top of her. He continued to rape her after she woke up.

Ahmadi had denied the offence and still maintained he was innocent of the charge to a social worker who prepared a report on him.

Defence counsel Margaret Breslin told the court that Ahmadi was born and raised in Afghanistan but came here seeking "a better life".

The court heard that as a 15-year-old Ahmadi was classed as "an unaccompanied child seeking asylum".

He came to Scotland when he was aged 16.

The defence counsel said: "He has been more of less in full-time employment since he came to Glasgow."

She said he had been "a useful member of society" and had managed to secure his own tenancy.

She said that on the night of the attack Ahmadi and the victim had both consumed alcohol.

But she added: "There are no problems so far as alcohol or drugs are concerned."

The court heard that a social worker who prepared a background report on Ahmadi had concluded that there was a high risk of sexual offending in the future but his counsel challenged that conclusion.
