Emergency roadworks gridlock in Dumbarton
Emergency partial closure of the A82
Last updated 15th Dec 2022
Drivers have been caught in miles of stationary traffic stretching from Dumbarton to Erskine caused by an emergency partial closure of the A82.
The southbound carriageway has been closed at the Dunglass Roundabout for what Traffic Scotland described as repairs to an unstable verge.
Glasgow-bound traffic is being diverted onto the A814 through the villages of Bowling and Old Kilpatrick.
The knock-on effect of drivers needing to turn right at the roundabout is having a severe impact on traffic heading towards Dumbarton.
At 8am queues of stationary traffic were stretching back across the Erskine Bridge onto the south bank of the River Clyde towards the junction with the M8.
A spokesperson for Amey said: "An incident response is taking place to tackle an unstable verge adjacent to the A82 southbound at Mount Pleasant. To ensure the stability of the bank adjacent to the carriageway, a geotechnical assessment of the site is taking place which will inform further measures to stabilise the slope.
"We are asking road users to avoid this route if at all possible, and at present there are likely to be some delays, especially at peak times. Please plan your journey accordingly.
"Last week a localised slip was observed on the slope adjacent to this location. Works to protect the slope and remove any at-risk vegetation was commenced immediately with installation of measures to temporarily stabilise the slope and maintain the safety of road users.
"Over the course of the last few days the slope has continued to move and become increasingly unstable, to the extent that a temporary full closure of the southbound A82 is currently in place to ensure the safety of road users and highway operatives
A temporary southbound signed diversion is currently in place for cars and light vehicles. Northbound traffic is operating as normal. Full details of the traffic management are available on our website."
