A 70-year-old woman has died and a man is fighting for his life, following a crash on the A702 near Abington.

At around 1:30pm on Saturday a Kia Rio was travelling northbound when it hit a Vauxhall Astra that was overtaking.

Emergency services raced to the scene, but the 70 year old woman driving the Kia couldn't be saved.

After colliding with her car, the Astra then hit a Volvo going in the opposite direction.

That driver wasn't hurt, but the 25 year old in the Astra was rushed to Queen Elizabeth University hospital in Glasgow where staff say he's in a critical condition.

Police are trying to piece together what happened, but are keen to speak to anyone who saw the crash - particularly if you might have dashcam footage.

Sergeant Scott Sutherland from the Divisional Road Policing Unit based at Motherwell said: “I would appeal to anyone who was travelling on the A702 near to Abington yesterday afternoon, who may have witnessed the crash or observed any of the vehicles on the road prior to it happening, to please get in touch.

“I would particularly like to speak to any motorists with dashcams who were on the road around the time of the incident, as you may have captured footage that could assist with our enquiries.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact the Divisional Road Policing Unit based at Motherwell via 101, quoting incident number 2033 of Saturday 10 March 2018."
