Three people remain in a serious condition in hospital following a crash involving a bus and a car.

The Stagecoach bus and a Mercedes collided on the A78, near Hunterston roundabout at Fairlie, North Ayrshire, at around 10.10am on Saturday.

The 53-year-old man behind the wheel of the Mercedes died at the scene. He was the only person in the car.

Police Scotland on Sunday confirmed the 60-year-old driver of the bus and a 69-year-old woman who was a passenger on board are still being treated at Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth University Hospital after suffering serious head injuries. Staff at the hospital describe their conditions as serious.

A further passenger, a 57-year-old man remains at Crosshouse Hospital, where he is said to be in a serious but stable condition.

The remaining seven passengers who were taken to hospitals for treatment have now been released.

Sergeant Iain Pittams, of the road policing department at Irvine, is appealing for information.

He said: Inquiries into the incident are continuing and we are asking that anyone who saw the crash or who has any information about it to contact police.

We are keen to hear from drivers who were on the A78 before the crash, who may have seen the silver Mercedes car before it collided with the bus, to get in touch.''

Information can be passed to officers by phoning 101.
