A 21-year-old man has died following a road crash on the M74 near to Bothwell.

A 21-year-old man has died following a road crash on the M74 near to Bothwell.

Police Scotland released the following statement:

"Around 2305 hrs on Saturday 10 September the 21-year-old man was driving a blue coloured Ford Fiesta south on the M74 between the Bothwell Services and the Raith Interchange. At this time the car apparently went out of control causing it to cross the central reservation, collide with a lamppost and then overturn and come to rest on the opposite carriageway.

The 21-year-old man was taken to Monklands District General Hospital where he died a short time after admission.

A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

Sergeant Craig McDonald at the Divisional Road Policing Unit at Motherwell said:

“We are currently trying to establish the circumstances of this tragic incident and I‘d like to speak to anyone, who has not already spoken to police, who witnessed the crash.
