With the finale of Marvel Studios' WandaVision arriving on Disney+ this Friday, we're speculating who the mysterious cameo that the show's stars Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany have hinted at. Many have assumed that we can expect a cameo as significant as Luke Skywalker's appearance in the season two finale of the Mandalorian last year.

In an interview with Esquire, Paul explained, "There is one character that has not been revealed. And it is very exciting. It is an actor I've longed to work with all of my life. We have some amazing scenes together and I think the chemistry between us is extraordinary and fireworks on set."

Paul's co-star Elizabeth has also added to TVLine that she was shocked that the cameo hadn't leaked yet... So let's dive into who people think may be making a surprise appearance in WandaVision episode 9.

🚨 Spoiler warning for WandaVision episodes 1-8 (and possibly episode 9 if any of these guesses are right!) 🚨

Who could be the surprise cameo in WandaVision's finale episode?

Sir Ian McKellen

One of the earliest guesses that came about when news of a cameo appeared was veteran actor Ian McKellen. Ian appeared as Magneto, a mutant with the ability to control metal objects in 20th Century Fox's X-Men film series. In the comic books Magneto is Wanda's father but Marvel Studios have not been able to use any X-Men characters or even the word 'mutant', as these characters were owned by Fox, however that all changed when Disney bought Fox.

We've already seen Evan Peters make an appearance in WandaVision as Wanda's brother Pietro, despite his version of the character appearing in Fox's films. So it's a fair argument that we could see these two separate universes collide as a way of introducing mutants to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However we should add that it isn't yet clear if Evan is playing the same version of Pietro from the X-Men films or if this is more of a fourth wall nod for the audience.

Michael Fassbender

We couldn't suggest Ian McKellen and ignore Michael Fassbender, who played a younger version of Magneto in the X-Men prequel series. If Evan Peters is playing the X-Men version of his character Michael would make more sense as he was playing Magneto during the same timeline as Evan Peters.

Sir Patrick Stewart or James McAvoy

Another big X-Men guess is a cameo by Professor X who was played by Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy in the X-Men films. Professor X often plays a key role in joining teams of mutants together and even started his own school to help look after younger mutants who need help controlling their powers. He has the power of telepathy so does share similar powers to Wanda albeit far less powerful!

Benedict Cumberbatch

Now for a suggestion that stays within the MCU, Benedict Cumberbatch who plays Doctor Strange. Now it has already been announced that Elizabeth Olsen will be returning as Wanda in Doctor Strange 2, so it's likely that the season finale of WandaVision will lead into the storyline for the Sorcerer Supreme's sequel film.

When Paul Bettany was talking to Esquire he pointed out that he had the opportunity to work with an actor he'd never worked with before, and although Doctor Strange and The Vision both appeared in Avengers: Infinity War, the two characters were never in the same scene together.

Paul Bettany

Yes you read that right, we're speculating that the big cameo could be one of the main characters, and that it was Bettany all along! In the Esquire interview Paul goes on to talk about how good the chemistry he had with this actor was, and that there were "fireworks on set". Well what if that was just him trolling us?

In the mid-credits scene of episode 8 it is revealed that SWORD have built a weapon out of The Vision's corpse and that the version of The Vision living with Wanda was actually created entirely out of her chaos magic. So it's very likely that SWORD's Vision will fight against Wanda's Vision (interesting pun there) both of whom will be played by Paul Bettany.
