James Cracknell reveals how his brain injury affected his Strictly journey
He suffered a life-changing injury in 2010
Last updated 2nd Oct 2019
James Cracknell became the first celebrity to be kicked off Strictly Come Dancing 2019 over the weekend. Although it was one of the more obvious exits on the show, it was quite heartbreaking after hearing how much James had enjoyed his brief time on the show.
He's now spoken out about his short Strictly stint in an interview on Lorraine, explaining what had inspired him to go on the show in the first place - despite admitting that he'd never had much dance skill to begin with.
The former Olympic athlete said, "There are actually probably two reasons - a lot of the things I’ve done, I know I’m going to be ok at, sporting and endurance... But I knew I was going to be bad at it."
He continued, "I think there’s a block that people have, I know I especially do, of being afraid to look stupid. That’s a big hurdle to get over - the fear of putting yourself out there. I knew I wouldn’t be the best dancer in the world, I now have proof at least! But putting yourself in that position is actually quite a good thing to do in life.
"Also, as much as I think rowing is very good, my kids aren’t that into it. But they are into this. For them to see me, they knew I would be very bad anyway. The only really disappointing thing was they were going to come to rehearsals this week, and so they don’t get to. They were looking forward to meeting Luba."
Speaking about the brain injury he sustained in 2010 that left him with life-changing injuries, James admitted that it had affected certain elements of his time on Strictly, "I don’t think I would have been a dancer before. With anything related to the brain, you look ok and people think you are ok.
"One thing is it definitely affects your confidence. One thing you need from Strictly is massive confidence to put yourself out there. I would be lying to say there was a natural talent here before the accident that suddenly got lost."
James also addressed rumours that he'd kicked off backstage after being voted off, after rubbishing the claims earlier this week on Instagram. He told Lorraine, "I could see someone getting annoyed if they were top of the leaderboard and then got voted off, whereas going into it being the bottom of the leader board you are pretty sure you are going to be in the mix at the bottom.
"I was not surprised and I can cope with being a bad dancer, that’s not a surprise. But right through everything, I did in sport as well, being a bad loser is something I never have been. On Saturday we went for it - you can do all you can."
He also spoke out about the breakdown of his 17-year marriage to Beverley Turner earlier this year, "You want the kids to be happy and showing them good examples in everything. We made the difficult decision and we had been together for 17 years," before adding that he now has a new partner.
