Sir Anthony Hopkins has exclusively told us he was once considered for James Bond.

In recent years there has been chatter that he might become a Bond villain, but 45 years ago he was in contention to be 007 himself.

Despite missing out on the role, Sir Anthony is far from disappointed with how his career has turned out: "I accept what I do, what I've been cast as over the years, I'm very happy with that."

In 1991 he won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance as Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs, and has since been considered one of the living greats of the acting world.

So his latest role in Transformers: The Last Knight came as a surprise to some, with many questioning his choice to appear in the film.

Sir Anthony had a simple response though: "Why not? People get all sniffy about that. I'm not sniffy about things. I love these sort of movies, and to work with Michael Bay, Mark Wahlberg, I just enjoy working, and I'll go on until I stop."

He had a lot of praise for his co-star, Mark Wahlberg too, telling us: "I admire him...you have to be very disciplined....Mark told me he's in bed at nine o'clock at night, he doesn't socialise much, he gets up at three or four o'clock in the morning and runs and works out - that's good."

Michael Bay has directed all five Transformers films, but The Last Knight is his last. Sir Anthony describes him as "a piece of work, he's like a string ray, but he's a great guy, a pussycat really".
