She has denied rumours she will replace Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear

Sue Perkins has temporarily quit Twitter after receiving threats over reports she was set to replace Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear.

The TV presenter, who currently co-hosts The Great British Bake Off, was one of the names reported to potentially front a new-look Top Gear.

However since the 45-year-old was made bookmakers favourite, she has received lots of abusive messages on social media.

Perkins, who has 574,000 followers on Twitter, described the Top Gear rumours as “fabricated”.

Another favourite for the role, radio DJ Chris Evans, has also denied reports that he will take over from Clarkson on the next series.

It is currently unclear whether Top Gear co-hosts Richard Hammond and James May will remain on the show, with their contracts rumoured have expired last month.

Sue Perkins currently presents a number of television shows, including programmes on travel and the Edinburgh festival, and hosts new 'Game Of Thrones' live discussion show ‘Thronecast’.
