It's reported the leader of South Ayrshire Council is temporarily stepping down - as police confirm they are investigating an alleged recording of Martin Dowey appearing to promise major contracts to friends.

The tape, first given to the Sunday Mail, also allegedly shows the Conservative councillor calling officials “f*g useless” and claiming “all the top ones I can sack”.

Mr Dowey has denied any fault - but remains at the centre of calls to resign by opposition politicians.

Labour MSP for South Scotland, Carol Mochan said: "said: "There is no justification for this. It degrades trust in the council. His position is untenable."

Labour councillor for the Kyle ward, Duncan Townson, said: "In order to protect the reputation of the council during the investigation, Mr Dowey has no choice but to step aside and allow another councillor from within his group, not linked in any way to the ongoing investigations, to take over leadership at this time, due to the very serious nature of the allegations.

"I believe his position at this time is untenable."

Ayr MSP Siobhian Brown said: "Given the really serious nature of the allegations that have emerged over the weekend, it's only right that Mr Dowey stands down as leader while these investigations continue.

"His comments about council staff are of real concern.

"Remarks like these are highly disrespectful and dismissive of staff who work at the County Buildings.

"This arrogant attitude underscores the need for a leader who values and supports the dedicated employees of South Ayrshire Council.

"The residents of South Ayrshire deserve a leader who is fully focussed and free from distractions, and the staff deserve the respect that they're due."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We are in receipt of correspondence and it is currently being assessed."
