Kilwinning councillor 'disappointed' by two month suspension
A report by the Standards Commission concluded he had acted aggressively towards a group applying for funding last year.
Kilwinning councillor Donald Reid has voiced “surprise” at the verdict which saw him being given a two-month suspension for breaching the Councillors’ Code of Conduct.
And the Labour Group have thrown their support behind him with the Kilwinning member indicating that he is planning an appeal.
Depute Leader John Bell said: “We are disappointed with the panel’s decision. The complaint relates to an informal meeting of the locality partnership which was held online.
“I understand cllr Reid joined the meeting on a mobile device from a work location with his camera off. For the panel to hand out a two-month suspension in these circumstances seems extremely harsh. Cllr Reid would be right to consider his options.
“What we do know is that cllr Reid is one of the hardest working councillors in North Ayrshire. Someone who goes above and beyond to represent his constituents on local issues, as well volunteering countless hours to putting on community events such as the forthcoming Picnic in the Park.
“We know that he will continue to represent all of Kilwinning with the same dedication he has since the day he was elected.”
Cllr Reid added: “Ian Bruce (the Ethical Standards Commissioner) does these (hearings) all the time and even he did not recommend the sanctions given. So you will understand the surprise at the severity of the sanction.
“As a councillor, constituent work is not affected by the decision and I will continue to answer my phone and answer emails for those in need.”
