The much-anticipated return of the MV Caledonian Isles to the Arran Ardrossan ferry route has been hit with another setback.

Last week, the vessel returned to Brodick to undergo sea trials, after being out of service since February for repairs.

However, Calmac reported finding a gearbox issue shortly after the tests.

Now, following further investigation, the ferry operator admits the ship will need a full gearbox overhaul.

A CalMac spokeswoman said: “We are very sorry for this further disruption, and we are extremely grateful to customers for their patience and understanding when their bookings had to be moved.

“Our teams are working closely with external contractors to ensure that MV Caledonian Isles can return to usual service as quickly as possible.”

It is hoped the spare parts will be on the vessel this week.

The gearbox is being stripped down and cleaned before the new parts are installed.

Once repairs are completed, alignment work with the gearbox and engine will be required.

It is anticipated that it may be a further 10 days before the vessel can return to service -

this is subject to change based on repairs and alignment.

MV Hebridean Isles will stay on the main Arran route while MV Lord of the Isles will stay on the Islay service.

The 31-year-old Caledonian Isles broke down on February 21st, with Calmac receiving confirmation from the dry dock operator it required significant steel renewal and repair, at a cost of an estimated £5 million.
