Police watchdog in plea for witnesses after fatal fall in Glasgow

The police watchdog investigating the lead-up to a man falling to his death in Glasgow city centre is appealing for witnesses.

A 47 year old, who is yet to be named, died in hospital after plunging from a window at the Grand Central Hotel on Gordon Street on Friday morning.

The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) which is urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has photographs or mobile phone footage to contact them.

A spokeswoman for the Investigation team says:

“We are keen to speak to anyone who was in Gordon Street near to the entrance of Glasgow Central Station between 11.15 am and 11.30 am on Friday 11 November 2016 who may have witnessed the incident.”

Police say the incident happened after two officers attended the hotel at 11:30am as part of an ongoing inquiry.

Gordon Street was closed for several hours as police investigated the circumstances surrounding the man's death.

Police Scotland says that as part of "normal procedure" the incident had been referred to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner and a report would be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

A spokeswoman for the PIRC said: "The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) has instructed the Police Investigations & Review Commissioner to carry out an investigation into police contact with a man who died following an incident in Gordon Street, Glasgow, on Friday 11 November 2016.

"A report on the Commissioner's findings will be submitted to the COPFS in due course."
