Man jailed for Glasgow meat cleaver attack
A man who attacked a mum with a meat cleaver, in Glasgow, has been jailed for two and a half years.
A man who attacked a mum with a meat cleaver, in Glasgow, has been jailed for two and a half years. Naihui Yu, 51, threatened to kill Mei Qian Yu’s family and brandished a meat cleaver at him before attacking his wife, You Wu, with the weapon. When Mr Yu then went after the accused who had made off, he was pushed to the ground and attacked with a pole. Yu stood trial at Glasgow Sheriff Court where the couple gave evidence against him. Mrs Wu,37, claimed she was attacked because she turned down Yu's requests for money and sex. But after evidence from them and other witnesses, Yu pled guilty to three charges of assault on May 1, last year, at Lymburn Street, Argyle Street and Parkgrove Terrace in Glasgow’s west end including an assault on Mr Yu to his severe injury. Martin Jones QC jailed Yu for 30 months. Yu approached Mr Yu when he was in his car, and threatened to “hack his whole family to death” and brandished the meat cleaver. He then left Lymburn Street and went for Mrs Wu who was walking nearby. He threatened to kill her family and assaulted her with the cleaver. She told the court she met Yu when she arrived from China in 2007 before her husband came to the country. Describing the attack in court she said: “He was running towards me, he looked very angry and was running then mumbling something I couldn’t hear. “Then he took something out from his body, it was covered with paper then hit my head and then threatened to kill my family.” She said she was hit by the flat part of the meat cleaver and suffered a sore head as a result. Mrs Wu said that she then saw her husband who followed Yu and when she later caught up with him he was covered in blood. Yu went on to attack Mr Yu at Parkgrove Terrace, where he was thrown to the ground and repeatedly hit on the body with a metal pole. The victim suffered fractured ribs and a punctured lung as well as cuts to his head. Procurator fiscal depute Mark Allan, prosecuting asked Mrs Wu: “Are you saying this man threatened you and your family and struck you with a meat cleaver because you had refused to give him money?” She replied: “Also the demand for sex.” He continued: “Are you telling the truth about this?” and replied “Yes.” It was suggested to her that her husband had owed Yu money but she denied that.
