One man has died after three vehicles collided on the M8 causing a fire, police have confirmed.

Scotland's busiest motorway has been shut in both directions after a crash thought to involve a car, a van and a lorry.

Emergency services were called to the scene at junction three of the M8 where one of the vehicles caught fire at around 8.50am.

The collision happened on the eastbound carriageway near Livingston but both sides of the motorway have been closed, police said.

All traffic is being diverted, with eastbound vehicles being taken off at J3A Bathgate, and westbound at J2 Claylands.

There was also heavy traffic on the A89 and A899, with delays at Newbridge roundabout and increased traffic on the A71.

Police Scotland say the motorway is likely to remain closed for several hours.
