Man Detained In State Hospital

A man who stabbed his brother-in-law in the throat while he slept has been ordered to be detained without limit of time in the State Hospital.

Stephen Dalton, 29, was acquitted on grounds of a mental disorder of attempting to murder Charles McClinton at flat in Cambuslang, on August 10, last year.

But, judge Lord Boyd - after hearing evidence from two psychiatrists who said Dalton is suffering from paranoid schizophrenia - imposed a compulsion and restriction order on him.

Psychiatrist Dr Gillian Howison told the High Court in Glasgow that Dalton, in her opinion, suffers from hallucinations and feelings of persecution.

She added: "Without treatment in the State Hospital there is a risk he would commit further offences."

Dalton's brother-in-law Mr McClinton had been sleeping in an armchair and woke up to find a knife embedded in his neck almost up to the spine.

He tried to lock Dalton in a first floor bedroom until the police and ambulance arrived, but Dalton jumped out the window, breaking his hip.
