Police in Airdrie are looking for a man they have spotted on CCTV who was walking close to the scene of a murder last week.

The body of 40-year-old Malcolm McLaren was discovered at his flat in the North Lanarkshire town's Clark Street on Thursday.

Last night detectives and uniform officers were in the area to stop and speak to locals.

Police said they hoped the operation would help trace whoever was responsible for the "terrible crime".

DCI Paul Livingstone, who is leading the inquiry, said: "We are now almost a week into this inquiry and this operation is about speaking to people who were in the area last week, or who perhaps use this route on a regular basis.

"Hopefully we can jog their memories into remembering something they may have seen or heard that could assist our investigation.

"We have a team of experienced detectives dedicated to this inquiry in an attempt to identify the person responsible for this terrible crime."

The detective said his team was continuing to piece together Mr McLaren's last movements in the days leading up to his death.

"He was in Airdrie town centre around 1500 hours last Wednesday afternoon before making his way home to his flat in Clark Street," Det Ch Insp Livingstone said.

"I'd like to reassure the local community that we are working to identify who is responsible for this murder.

"If anyone has concerns please contact your local officers, however, I do need people to come forward with any information they have, regardless of how insignificant it may seem."
