Glasgow’s Oktoberfest gathering’s been cancelled, after organisers failed to obtain a drinks licence from the city council – over ‘public safety’ fears.

Tickets had already been sold for the 5-day event which was due to be held in the city’s Blythswood Square from the 19th October.

Glasgow Licensing Board has told Clyde News say they had no option to reject the application due to safety concerns about the chosen location, due to the number of cars that pass in and out of the square.

A spokesman for Glasgow Licensing Board said: “An application for an event in Blythswood Square was rejected due to the location and related public safety concerns.

“No further licence applications were lodged by the event organiser.

“It’s our understanding the organiser was unable to secure an alternative venue.”

Organisers say anyone who’s already purchased tickets will be refunded as they posted news of the cancellation on their Facebook page:

Oktoberfest events will still go ahead in Edinburgh and Aberdeen this month and organiser say they plan to apply again for an event in Glasgow next year.
