Dumfries hillwalker rescued from Durisdeer dies

A hillwalker rescued in a major search operation today has died.

Three men were reported missing at 5.30pm on Tuesday 16th February sparking a major search operation.

Police drafted in support from the Moffat Mountain Rescue Team, The Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team and the Galloway Mountain Rescue Team as well as the coastguard helicopter.

The group, aged in their 60s and 70s, were found around 2pm on Wednesday 17th February 2015 and air lifted to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.

A police spokesperson said, "Police Scotland can confirm that one of the three missing walkers recovered earlier today near Durisdeer has been pronounced dead at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.

"The two other men are currently being treated for hypothermia in the hospital. Next of kin are being informed and the Procurator Fiscal has been informed."
