Police are appealing for information after the theft of an ATM cash box from the Waterloo area in the early hours of this morning
At around 1.50am, a call was received of four men attempting to steal a cashpoint at Royal Bank of Scotland on St Johns Road. Officers and the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) attended the location and confirmed that a cashbox was stolen, and the area was made safe. Enquiries continue to carry out a full search, CCTV and forensic investigation.
Witnesses saw an explosion and said the suspects driving off in a black Audi, described as possibly an estate vehicle.
Enquiries are ongoing to establish the whereabouts of the car.
Detective Chief Inspector Gayle Rooney said: "This incident highlights once again an extremely dangerous tactic in targeting ATM machines, which puts members of the public at serious risk."
"The techniques used by the men involved in this robbery were reckless in the extreme and it is only through good fortune that no-one was hurt."
"Police have had great successes in the past in targeting and bringing to justice ATM theft offenders and we will be relentless in identifying those responsible and bringing them to justice."
"Any information given will be acted on, and from previous offences, I also want to particularly appeal to anyone who lives in a rural area to be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to police."
