A mock-up of the new Merseyrail trains are on display in Birkenhead.

The new trains will be in use from 2020 and replace the trains that are currently 40 years old.

Stephen Rotheram, Liverpool City Region Metro Mayor said: "Before the new trains were designed and ordered, we asked the public what features they would like to see on them.

"We listened, and because of this, by 2020 we will see the most sophisticated trains in the country arrive on our network."

These trains will feature a sliding step to make it easier for wheelchair users to get on the train and have included extra safety features to avoid anyone falling into the gap between the train and the platform.

Merseytravel have said everything from the colours to the material of the seats has been decided by a focus group of 40 regular train users to ensure the train has modern, up-to-date features for the passengers.

Additionally, there will be WiFi on all the trains as well as three-point and USB plugs for passengers to use.

Andy Heath, Managing Director of Merseyrail said: "The mock-up is a very realistic replica of what passengers can expect from the new state-of-the-art trains. I would encourage the public and all our passengers to visit the mock-up so they can really appreciate the sense of space, new features and modern look and feel that we can all look forward to enjoying."
