Teaching unions on Merseyside fear another lockdown if parents aren't on board with home testing

Parents across Merseyside are being urged to work together with teachers to make the school return as smooth and safe as possible.

All pupils go back on Monday, although secondary schools have a week to stagger the return to allow for Covid testing to be carried out.

Students will be tested three times in the first fortnight and then given two lateral flow tests to use each week at home.

But the NEU have told us they have evidence not all parents are on board with the idea.

Pete Middleman's from the Union :

"We are picking up intelligence from our interaction with school leaders that parents aren't going to co-operate in the types of numbers necessary to make that testing effective.

"Teachers are entitled to expect that parents have done enough to reassure themselves that those children don't pose a risk to other school users or indeed don't pose a vector of transmission for the virus back out into the wider community.

"It's not something you would enjoy doing or find it easy to persuade your children to do but we recognise that this is part of a wider civic contribution to suppression of the virus and therefore there is an obligation on parents to co-operate with it as best as they can."
