Labour’s candidate Steve Rotheram has been re-elected into the role of Metro Mayor for the Liverpool City Region.

Rotheram received 198,726 votes taking 58% of all votes cast.

In a speech after the declaration was made he said:

“It’s truly a humbling result, all the more so that I got more than half of the vote everywhere.”

“It proves again that the tough decisions that I took last autumn to lead the city region through the pandemic were the right ones for us at that time.”

“More broadly, today’s result shows that devolution is starting to resonate here in the city region and it’s here to stay.”

“This result proves that the public have faith in devolution and the government must respond by devolving further powers and resources locally.”

“However we can’t escape the fact that recent days haven’t been great for our party. For me, the Labour Party isn’t just a passing vehicle to jump on to promote a personal ideology.”

“It shouldn’t be used as a football to be kicked around by transient factions.”

“I think I’ve been able to demonstrate what Labour have been able to achieve in power.”

“We clearly need to stop talking about listening to people and start hearing what they’re telling us if we are ever to regain their trust.”

It follows the election of Labour candidate Joanne Anderson as the City Mayor yesterday.

Labour also managed to hold on to 23 of the 31 seats that were up for grabs in the city council elections but did lose 3 seats to the Lib Dems.
