A man in his 50s has suffered life-threatening injuries after being knocked off his bike whilst cycling in Maghull.

Merseyside Police say they were contacted at 6.55am after reports a cyclist had been in collision with car on Northway, close to the Shell petrol station.

The car, believed to be a Skoda Octavia, failed to stop at the scene and enquiries are ongoing to trace the driver.

Road closures are currently in place in the surrounding area while an investigation into the collision remains ongoing.

Detective Sergeant Kurt Timpson, from Merseyside Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU), said: “We are making an urgent appeal to trace the driver of a car which failed to stop at the scene of a road traffic collision in Maghull this morning.

“We believe the car, a Skoda Octavia, with a plate between 2004 and 2013, would have suffered noticeable damage and we would ask for the public’s help in tracing its movements following the collision.

“Anyone who has seen the car, captured its movements on a dash cam, or know where it is now is asked to contact us as a matter of urgency.”

Police also say that following the initial collision, a roads policing officer who was on foot in attendance at the scene was in collision with a Ford Kuga. The driver of the car, a man in his 60s, has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drugs.

The male police officer has been taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening.
