A man's been charged with the murder of Liverpool student Rebecca Steer.

The 22-year-old was hit by a car when it mounted the pavement in Oswestry in the early hours of Sunday morning (9 October).

Rebecca was rushed to hospital, but died of her injuries shortly after.

Following her death, Rebecca’s family released a statement describing her as ‘the most loving, talented and kind hearted person you could ever wish to know’.

They went on to say: “We are all completely devastated by the loss of our beautiful girl Rebecca. She always had a smile and a laugh that made everybody love her. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and family. She was the best daughter, sister, granddaughter and friend anyone could ask for.

"Rest in Peace beautiful girl."

Staff at Liverpool John Moores University, where Becky was a criminal justice undergraduate, described her as a “very special person, an exceptional student, friend and inspiration to many.”

A spokesperson said: “The whole university community is stunned and extremely saddened.

Becky was an excellent, dedicated student with a real ambition to be a police officer. She was the one that stayed behind to ask questions after every session.

“A budding talent and admirable young woman, we were privileged to have her as a student.

“Becky will be sorely missed and our thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones at this tragic time.”

Stephen McHugh, 27, of Artillery Road, Oswestry, has been charged with murder, causing grievous bodily harm and driving offences.

He is due to appear at Kidderminster Magistrates’ Court today (Wednesday 12 October).

A 28-year-old man from Oswestry also arrested on suspicion of murder has been bailed.
