Man attacked with 'axe' in Toxteth park

The victim suffered serious injuries to his head and shoulder

Detectives are investigating an armed robbery in Princes Park, Toxteth, in which a man was injured.

At around 3.30pm, the victim, a man in his 60’s was approached by another man near Sunnyside. The man made demands for money before he struck the victim on the head with what was described as an axe. The offender then stole the victim’s wallet, before making off in the direction of Princes Gate.

The victim was taken to hospital and received treatment for serious injuries to his head and shoulder, which are not thought to be life threatening.

The offender is described as a white male with short black hair, around 5ft 8in tall and wearing a dark coloured tracksuit.

CCTV, forensic and witness enquiries are ongoing and detectives are keen to speak to anyone who may have information.

Detective Inspector Judith Blease said: “This was a particularly vicious attack on the victim, who has suffered some nasty injuries as a result.

“This incident occurred in the middle of the day in a busy park and I am sure someone must have witnessed something. You may have seen someone matching the description of the offender leaving the area, or the incident itself and I would urge anyone with information to please come forward.
