Liverpool mum's campaign for safer tyres passes major mileston
The Tyred campaign has been heard in Parliament today
A Merseyside mum's campaign to ban old tyres from the roads has taken a big step forward this afternoon.
Frances Molloy's son Michael died in a coach crash which was caused by a 20 year old tyre blowing out.
Michael, and two other people died in 2012 on their way back from Bestival
Ever since, Francis has been campaigning for a change in the law, calling on all public vehicles to ensure that tyres they use are no older than 10 years old.
Earlier this year, the campaign received backing from across Merseyside and from National Express, one of the country's biggest coach providers.
Now Merseyside MP Maria Eagle has tabled an Early Day Motion in Westminster - calling for the law to be changed.
She's told the House it's long overdue
Speaking in Parliament, the MP for Halewood and Garston said:
"I found it hard to believe that a potentially dangerous old tyre was lawful."
"I quickly became convinced this is a gap that could and show be closed"
Michael's mum Francis said
"To find out Micheal's death was because of a 19 year old tyre, it was unbearable, it still is unbearable."
"This doesn't cost the Government at all. This can be done through a normal MOT"
A second reading of the bill will now take place in December
