Health experts in Liverpool concerned over Covid threat to Christmas
There are calls to fast track Plan B to save the festive season
As Covid continues to spread across Merseyside, health experts here are calling on the government to move fast on any potential Plan B, or risk cancelling Christmas again.
Last week Health Secretary Sajid Javid said now is not the time for extra measures and the Prime Minister guaranteed a normal festive season.
Despite that, an increasing R number has lead to calls for the reintroduction of masks and social distancing to stop hospitals from being overwhelmed.
Graeme Mitchell is a public health lecturer at John Moores, he says things need to change sooner rather than later :
"The longer we leave it, the more cases we see, the more hospitalisations we see and the more deaths we sadly see. The actions we take to try to correct that will have to be harsher.
"If we leave it later and later then there is a potential that Christmas may be in peril again and we might be restricted on who we can see.
"He cancelled Christmas last year and I'm sure he won't want to go down as the Prime Minister who cancelled Christmas twice. He really wants to be on the ball on this; act early, act decisively and try to save Christmas again for us".
