Fans Supporting Foodbanks call for everyone to have a right to food
A petition set up to have it enshrined in law closes today
Five months on from Liverpool becoming the first Right To Food city in the country, a petition calling for EVERYONE to have legal access to meals is set to close later.
It was set up by Fans Supporting Foodbanks after it was revealed 10 million people in the UK are going hungry.
It's calling on the Government to introduce a basic Living Wage as well as support with things like utility bills and free school meals for kids.
West Derby MP Ian Byrne , one of the founders of the FSF, says it's really making a difference:
"It's a wonderful achievement by the Fans Supporting Foodbanks network and we're delighted that many Councils from Durham to Devon have now declared themselves right to food areas.
"It's sweeping the country but the petition does need the signatures so it would be fantastic if they could put their name down on the final day.
"There are four point five million children living in poverty and it's only going ot get worse as we come out of Covid.
"It's got to be an end to sticking plasters because everything that the fantastic people in this city and across the country do in regards to foodbanks they are just a sticking plaster so we need fundamental change and that's what the right to food will be doing".
