Calls to speed up Afghan evacuation so more lives can be saved

As Liverpool prepares to welcome some of the most vulnerable refugees from Afghanistan - we're hearing from the communities ready to offer them a second chance at life.

Evacuations of women and children are expected to intensify in the coming days after the Taliban refused to extend the August 31st deadline.

Becky Da Mota works for Bridge 2 in Toxteth who are collecting donated items to give to the refugees once they arrive here

She says as many people as possible need to be given a second chance at life :

"There was around fourteen thousand peopl eon the runway trying to get on to planes so when you look at that you just feel the rgency; it is a very real crisis and lives are at stake.

Bridge 2 are already helping around 250 refugees who've previously been sent here but are asking for more donated items to help the Afghan refugees when they arrive :

"Asylum seekers have five pounds a day so toiletries can be seen as luxury items so any sort of sanitary products, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shower gels and things like that.

"Coats, shoes, hats, scarves and gloves, if you're coming from a warmer climate the English Autum, nevermind Winter, can be a bit brutal".
