74-year league attendance record at Anfield smashed
Liverpool FC has seen its highest ever attendance of a league fixture
Saturday's game for Liverpool FC against Burnley saw the Reds record their highest-ever league attendance record.
The home match yesterday (10 February) ended with a 3-1 home victory, thanks to goals from Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Darwin Núñez.
The previous league attendance record at Anfield has been held for more than seven decades, with the club saying it harks back to December 1949, when the Reds were 'set in a 2-2 draw with Chelsea'.
That's not been trumped by more than a thousand fans, with the Burnley match seeing 59,896 fans flocking to the stadium to watch the game.
It comes as the phased opening of the Anfield Road Stand, which is being expanded, continues.
The league attendance record hasn't toppled the club's all-time record, though, which stands at 61,905.
That's when Liverpool won 2-1 over Wolves in the FA Cup - that was set all the way back in February 1952.
In a statement, Liverpool FC said: "Excellent progress continues to be made on the development of the Anfield Road Stand as the club progresses towards reaching a full stadium capacity of around 61,000."
