Merseyside Police are investigating reports of a robbery in Liverpool city centre last night, (Monday 13th November.)

At around 8.25pm a 19 year-old woman - a student from Liverpool John Moores University - had been walking along May Street, at the junction with Brownlow Hill, when she was approached by an unknown man who snatched her purse.

During a struggle, the woman suffered an injury to her stomach which was consistent with being stabbed.

She was taken to hospital where her condition is today described as stable.

The man is believed to run off in the direction of Brownlow Hill, possibly along Pleasant Street towards Clarence Street.

An investigation is underway and CCTV and witness enquiries are ongoing in the local area.

Parts of Mount Pleasant car park remained cordoned off this morning:

Detective Inspector Steve McGrath said: "I would appeal for anyone who was in the vicinity of May Street or Brownlow Hill at around 8.30pm last night who may have seen the incident or seen a male running away to get in touch.

"The investigation is in its early days but extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances of what happened, support the young woman concerned and find the person responsible.

"I want to make it clear that Merseyside Police will not tolerate the use of knives as weapons on our streets, and the force is absolutely determined to eradicate knife crime. Alongside our partners, we will continue to educate, enforce and act on any information given to us, to make the streets safer.

"We know knife crime can have devastating consequences for victims and their families, and we are committed to tackling the problem and identifying those involved so they can be put before the courts.
