The jury at the new Hillsborough Inquest concluded the 96 Liverpool fans who died were unlawfully killed.
Former Liverpool footballer, Michael Owen posted on Twitter: "Just landed from China and catching up with the news. Finally and way, way, way overdue, the truth prevails and justice is served. #jft96."
Everton FC put a special post on their own website, reading: "Everton Football Club salutes the Hillsborough families and their total vindication as Fighters for Justice. Theirs is the greatest victory in the history of football.
"RIP, the 96. Good night, God bless. From us across the Park.
Liberal Democrat MP for Southport John Pugh said: "It is a national embarrassment that getting to the truth has taken so long and extended the hurt, pain and anguish of the families but also the wider community in Merseyside.
"Some family members have not been able to see justice finally handed down. They deserved better than years of hiding behind brick walls and civil servants.
"I call on Theresa May to accept all of the recommendations in full and I call on the Prime Minister to make a formal apology on the floor of the House to the Hillsborough families and Liverpool.
Bassetlaw Labour MP John Mann said South Yorkshire Police should be disbanded and either re-configured as a new force based on the Sheffield City Region or merged with the West Yorkshire force.
“Nobody should pre-judge ongoing inquiries into the police but, whatever conclusions they reach, the credibility of the institution of South Yorkshire Police has been irreparably damaged,'' he said
“It needs a new identity and, more importantly, a new ethos and ethics. South Yorkshire Police should be disbanded.
“There are many hard-working police officers and staff currently working for South Yorkshire Police who have joined in recent years and they deserve a fresh start.''
