Protesters campaign against tolls at Widnes-Runcorn Bridge

Plans to bring in £2 charge when new Mersey Gateway opens next year

Protesters have gathered at the Widnes/Runcorn bridge this morning to voice their concerns about tunnel and road tolls.

Campaigners says introducing a toll charge on the Runcorn Bridge will be bad for businesses and commuters.

They are against plans to introduce a £2 charge for using the bridge and the new Mersey Gateway when it opens next year.

UKIP Deputy Leader Paul Nuttall was among those taking part in the protest: "I believe this is unfair to the people of Liverpool, particularly businesses as it will effect footfall and people who commute into Liverpool will be forced to pay even more every single day, and lets not forget people already play their council tax and road tax, and should not be forced to pay another stealth tax simply to access the city.

It will be bad for the people of Cheshire, bad for the people of Wales, bad for the people of Warrington, and equally bad for business in Liverpool."
