Detectives have renewed their appeal for information following the death of a man in Widnes.

One week after the death of Lee Briggs, aged 43, following an incident in St Marie’s Park, police are appealing for anyone who may have information, which could assist with their enquiries and who has not yet spoken to an officer, to get in touch.

Detective Inspector Steve Jones said: "We have already spoken to a lot of people as part of the ongoing investigation. I am aware that the park is well used by dog walkers and as a cut through, and I’m keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the park – or the immediate area – at the time of Lee’s death and who has not yet spoken to an officer to come forward. Even the smallest piece of information can be useful when piecing together a case.

"Officers are returning to the park today – one week on from Lee’s death – to speak to people in the hope of getting further information to assist with the case. This is believed to be an isolated and targeted incident and enquiries are ongoing in a bid to trace whoever is responsible."

On Monday 16 May police were called to St Marie’s Park, which is near Tesco Extra off Lugsdale Road, following the discovery of a man with serious injuries.

The man- who was identified as Lee - was taken to hospital by ambulance where he sadly died a short time later. A post mortem concluded the cause of death was due to a single stab wound.

A murder investigation was launched and officers from Cheshire Police’s Major Crime Directorate have been carrying out extensive enquiries in the local area including house-to-house enquiries, forensic enquiries and CCTV enquiries.

Local officers are continuing to provide reassurance to the community. They will remain in the area over the coming days and anyone with any issues or concerns is urged to speak to an officer.

Anyone with any information is urged to call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 628 of 16 May. Information can also be left anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111..
