Ambitious new plans have been announced for an possible transformation of Birkenhead Town Centre.

Developers Ion have launched a consultation for their 'Move Ahead Birkenhead' project - where they say they want to 'reimagine and regenerate the town centre'. The proposals include a redesigned Europa Pool site, with family resturautns and a Travelodge hotel around the Vue Cinema which is currently there.

Steve Parry, the Ion Developments managing director said: "Birkenhead needs to become a real asset to the Wirral which everyone uses at some time as an alternative draw to Liverpool City Centre"

A consultation period is getting underway, with a three day exhibition on the designs. Locals will be asked their viiews on stregnthening the shopping area, improving access to the Town Centre and attracing more people back into the area.

Cllr Phil Davies, leader of Wirral Council, said: “The regeneration of Birkenhead is part of the Wirral Growth Plan to improve the local economy and create new jobs.

“The Europa Pools project is one of a number of priority investment schemes – with an investment of £150m this year alone – to drive economic growth and create jobs.

“Birkenhead is a ‘sleeping giant’ and the opportunity to grow its retail, commercial and leisure offer is immense.”

The public exhibition is being held inside The Pyramids shopping centre tomorrow and Friday, 10am-6pm and on Saturday, 10am-5pm.
