The victim was found lying on the pavement in Lloyd Close with serious injuries to his upper body at around 5.15pm after a member of the public reported hearing several loud bangs. When police arrived they gave the man First Aid before paramedics got there and took him to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. A Home Office post mortem examination will take place today (Thursday) to establish a cause of death. A police investigation led by the force’s Matrix Serious Organised Crime unit and assisted by Liverpool CID and neighbourhood patrols has been launched and extensive enquiries are being carried out to establish the full circumstances of what happened. The victim is believed to have been aged in his mid-20s and specialist family liaison officers are working to identify who he is and inform his next of kin. Although a motive is not clear at this early stage of the investigation, detectives are treating it as a targeted attack. Lloyd Close has been cordoned off to the public while crime scene investigators carry out an examination of the area where the victim was found fatally injured. Detectives are carrying out house to house enquiries to see if anyone saw or heard anything suspicious and CCTV from the surrounding area is being examined. A large and highly visible police presence is currently in the area to provide reassurance to the local community and patrols have been stepped up in the Everton area. Detective Superintendent Lee Turner from MSOC said: “A young man has lost his life and we are doing everything we can to bring the person or persons responsible to justice. It is still the very early stages of a major investigation and we need the public’s help in identifying who was in Lloyd Close at the time this incident happened. I would urge anyone living in the street or nearby or anyone passing by who saw or heard anything suspicious to please do the right thing and come forward. Even the most trivial or insignificant piece of information could be important and help us bring the perpetrators to justice. “The use of firearms on the streets of our communities will not be tolerated by Merseyside Police and we will relentlessly pursue all those Involved in serious and organised crime such as this. We need the public’s help in finding who these people are and where they hide their weapons.
