Merseyside MP's pay tribute to Jo Cox
Merseyside MP's have spoken out following the tragic news of MP Jo Cox's death.
Vigils have been held across the country for MP Jo Cox who died after being shot and stabbed on a West Yorkshire street.
The 41-year-old mum of two was attacked outside a library in Birstall where she was holding an advice surgery.
A 52-year-old man has been arrested.
Jo was only elected as an MP for Batley and Spen 13 months ago in May 2015. She’s been described as a ‘tireless campaigner for Syrian refugees’ and founded a group called ‘Friends of Syria’.
Following the shock news of her death yesterday MP’s from across Merseyside have paid tribute to their friend and colleague.
Walton MP Steve Rotheram told us;
‘People will remember her as someone who dedicated her life to public service. She worked for charities, had the right principles and values that people in the Labour movement should have. When people have time to reflect, I think what she achieved in such a short life will be what we remember her for.’
Wirral South MP Alison McGovern told us;
‘It’s just devastating, it’s very hard to believe this has really happened. Jo was an incredible person who spent her life working for the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world. In Jo they had an incredible champion… it’s difficult to comprehend how this could happen to someone who was so good.’
Other MP’s have also shared their condolences on twitter. Wavertree MP Luciana Berger described her as ‘**A kind, wonderful, passionate, super talented colleague’.
