Meet the Merseyside Athletes aiming for Gold at Rio

With just under a week to go until the Olympics in Rio - Radio City's been speaking to some of the Athletes from Merseyside - going for Gold.

With just under a week to go until the Olympics in Rio - Radio City's been speaking to some of the Athletes from Merseyside - going for Gold.

Anyika Ounura part of the Women's 4 x 400 metres for Team GB

Anyika Ounura who's part of the Women's 4 x 400 metres for Team GB - started her career at Liverpool Harriers in Wavertree.

She was selected for the 4x100m squad at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing but never made the final team at the Bird's Nest.

She finally made her Olympic debut four years later at London 2012, competing in the 100m and 200m.

She studied economics at university and her brother is former Huddersfield and Gillingham footballer Iffy Onuora.

The Opening Ceremony officially opens the Games on Friday, and will mark her third games.

"The preperation has been fantastic, running the 400 has been a change, but I wouldn't change it for the world."

"I'm excited about the prospect about having another Olympic games and potentially coming back with a medal which is so exciting for me, and just going out there and doing the country proud"

"Just going out there and doing the country proud, it's something not everyone gets the oppurtinity to do, so I hope I do it to the best of my ability."

After the London Olympics in 2012, Anyika went through major changes and hurdles to prepare herself fully for Rio.

"In 2012 I was dealing with a lot. My father had passed away 6 months before the games and I didnt even know if I was going to make the Olympic Team.

"I was just excited to compete, but then I was disdapointed with my performance. After that I told myself I need to make changes"

Aniyka started training at Loughborough and says the move was the best step for her career.

"I never imagined I'd have a PB every single year, and I've gone from running 4 x 100 to being a crucial member of the 4 x 400."

"'Ive just set myself goals and just try to give anyone advice, I trry to tell them to aspire to be better than you were yestersday, and just strive for every goal that you set. It's helped me to be where I am, and establuish myself as a World Class athlete. "
