Liverpool bids to host 2026 Commonwealth Games
A letter has been written to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport to discuss Liverpool's options to host the event.
The host city for the games in 2026 hasn’t yet been chosen, but Liverpool have thrown their name into the hat.
A letter’s been written to the Culture Secretary, John Whittingdale, asking for a meeting to pursue Liverpool’s bid for event.
It’s hoped the city’s track record as Capital of Culture in 2008 will make it a strong contender.
Since the Games began in 1930, only five UK cities have hosted the event and two of these were in Edinburgh.
The Manchester games in 2002 were massively successful and showed that it’s not just London that can rise to the occasion and host major international sporting events.
Both Manchester and Edinburgh used the Commonwealth Games to deliver a regeneration boost for deprived parts of their cities, and it’s hoped the same could be possible for parts of North Liverpool.
