Detectives are appealing for witnesses following a suspected arson attack at a property on Tithebarn Lane, Kirkby, in the early hours of this morning, Tuesday 23 August.

Police were called at 2.20am to reports that wheelie bins had been pushed against the front door of the property and set alight.

The fire caused damage to the front door and smoke damage to the interior of the house.

Nobody was injured in the incident but a 25 year-old woman who was in the house together with two children, a five year-old girl and a two year-old girl, were taken to hospital as a precaution to be checked for the signs of smoke inhalation. They have since been released.

House to house enquiries are ongoing and CCTV and forensic opportunities are being explored.

Detective Constable John Wheeler said: “Fortunately nobody was injured in this incident but the consequences could have been much worse as there were two children in the house at the time. "We would appeal to any members of the public who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area around Tithebarn Lane last night to contact us. We would also ask people to examine their consciences and appeal for anyone who has any information which could assist with our enquiry to get in touch."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Knowsley CID on 0151 777 6562 or the confidential Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
