Jury sworn in for trial of teenager accused of murdering Merseyside Police Officer

A jury has been sworn in for the trial of a teenager accused of murdering Merseyside Police officer Dave Phillips.

A jury has been sworn in for the trial of a teenager accused of murdering Merseyside Police officer Dave Phillips.

Clayton Williams, 19, denies murdering father-of-two PC Dave Phillips, 34, in Wallasey on October 5 last year.

The officer was hit by a Mitsubishi pick-up truck driven by Williams while trying to use a stinger device to stop the vehicle which had been stolen in a burglary in Birkenhead, Merseyside.

PC Phillips died in hospital shortly afterwards.

Williams, of Wheatland Lane, Wallasey, has pleaded guilty to the burglary of an estate agents where the car was taken, and to aggravated vehicle taking.

He also denies a charge of attempted grievous bodily harm with intent to PC Thomas Birkett, who jumped out of the way as the Mitsubishi ploughed into PC Phillips.

The jury have been told that the proseuction will open the case tomorrow morning, Tuesday 8th March. The trial is expected to last around 2 weeks.
