Firefighters have been tackling a large fire at a derelict hotel in Widnes since 5.30am.

Firefighters are tackling a large fire at a derelict hotel in Widnes. Police were called out at approximately 5.30am today, Wednesday 18th May 2016. There is significant smoke in the area and 20 homes nearby have been evacuated. Others are also being advised to keep windows and doors closed and stay inside where possible. Motorists are being told to avoid the area due to a number of road closures, including: · Albert Road - From its junction with Peel House c Lane to its junction with Mill Brow · Halton View Road - From its junction with Page Lane to its junction with Albert Road At this stage the cause of the fire is unknown, although anyone who believes that they may have seen anything suspicious or has any information is urged to contact Cheshire police on 101, quoting incident 77 of 18 May 2016.
